Sardinian Landscape – Concert by Paolo Angeli and Mirko Guerrini, Sydney

Sardinian Landscape – Concert by Paolo Angeli (tailored Sardinian guitar & vocalist) and Mirko Guerrini (saxophones)

Paolo Angeli and Mirko Guerrini will perform together in a very specialised project that takes its inspiration from traditional Sardinian songs and brilliant innovations. Their spontaneous improvisations, particularly the use of the adapted Sardinian guitar that has intricate mechanical and electronic extensions, open the way to a myriad of sounds. Mirko Guerrini is a brilliant eclectic multi-instrumentalist, composer and director, as well as a master in jazz. Their conjoint exhibition highlights the perfect cross over of traditional music with diverse musical styles such as jazz, classical music and contemporary music.

Starting from the traditional instrument Paolo Angeli created what can only be referred to as a guitar-orchestra: 18 strings, hybrid between guitar and baritone, cello and drums, with piano hammers, pedals and variable size helixes. With this unique creation the Sardinian musician re-elaborates, improvises and composes non labelled music, suspended between free Jazz, folk noise, pop minimalist and post-rock. Since the mid-nineties Angeli has published 8 solo albums. He has been living in Barcelona since 2005 and he regularly performs on tour at the most important festivals and theatres in Europa, Russia, USA, Canada, Africa and South America. His last success was the Womex 2014 which entered him in the list of most prestigious musicians as “innovator with tradition” of the world scene. In the nineties his encounters with historical keeper of “Gallura and Logudore” traditional tunes, and with the undisputed Master of Avant-garde Fred Frith, were considered of great importance. Equally important was the request for a new model of Sardinian guitar, conceptualised by USA guitarist Pat Metheny and built by Liuteria Stanzani of Bologna. Angeli has improvised e collaborated with Antonello Salis, Fred Frith, Hamid Drake, Evan Parker, Pat Metheny, Jon Rose and many others.

Mirko Guerrini was born in Florence in 1973. He is a brilliant eclectic multi-instrumentalist, composer and director, as well as a master in jazz. Guerrini started his musical education at a very young age and graduated in classical saxophone from the L. Cherubini Conservatorium in Florence in 1992. His study of jazz started in 1991 with notable teachers such as Mauro Grossi, Maurizio Giammarco and Dave Liebman. He then graduated with an honours degree in Jazz level II from the same Conservatorium. Guerrini has collaborated and played with internationally renowned artists such as Stefano Bollani, Enrico Rava, Caetano Veloso, Dave Liebman, Peter Erskine, Billy Cobham and many others performing in some of the most important international festivals at Rio de Janeiro, San Paolo, Melbourne, New York and Toronto. Mirko Guerrini regularly holds seminars at international centres both in Italy and abroad. Guerrini has also worked as director with the Orchestra Regionale of Tuscany, with the Solisti of Perugia, the Orchestra da Camera of Campania, the Orchestra A. Toscanini, the Monash University Symphonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of Magna Grecia. Currently he is artistic director of the Teatro Ridotto Politeama of Prato and teaches at the Istituto Musicale Pietro Mascagni of Livorno. He was nominated Adjunct Fellow and Teaching Associate at the Sir Zelman Cowen Music School, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
