Beyond classics. New Italian Cinema

The Italian Cultural Institute, after the success of the previous movie cycles Masters of Neorealism: Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica in 2015 and Marcello Mastroianni: Lover and Legend in 2016, is pleased to present a new cycle dedicated to Contemporary Italian Cinema. Once more this year we will open a window on Italy through the “Seventh Art” by offering viewers a historical perspective, with Mario Martone’s masterpieces Noi credevamo and Il giovane favoloso, as well as a selection of the best films depicting the genius, the irony and the intensely emotional nature which characterize Italian dramatic comedy, through some of the most recent works by the great Italian directors Daniele Ciprì, Giuseppe Gagliardi, Gianni Amelio and Carlo Mazzacurati, who passed away in January 2014 and whose last film, La sedia della felicità, we propose in this new cycle of screenings.

Thursday, 3 August 2017:
Il giovane favoloso, directed by Mario Martone, 2014, 145’.

from 7.30 pm to 9.50 pm

English subtitles

The third movie that will be screened is Mario Martone’s last work, Il giovane favoloso. With his masterful interpretation, Elio Germano brilliantly portrays a complex and multifaceted character, that of poet and philosopher Giacomo Leopardi. Leopardi is a child prodigy growing up under the implacable gaze of his father, in a house that is like a library, which broadens his mind and his horizons, but which is also a prison, isolating him and confining him to Recanati, while outside a whole universe is waiting for him. Meanwhile, Europe is shaken by a wave of revolutions and Giacomo desperately looks for contacts with the outside world. He finally manages to escape at the age of 24, when he leaves Recanati. The Italian high society opens its doors to him, but Leopardi possesses a free and rebellious mind and he is not capable of adapting to it.

The cycle will continue with the following screenings:
• Thursday, 7 September: L’intrepido (Gianni Amelio)
• Thursday, 19 October: La sedia della felicità (Carlo Mazzacurati)
• Thursday, 2 November: Noi credevamo (Mario Martone)
