Beyond classics. New Italian Cinema

L’intrepido, directed by Gianni Amelio, 2013, 104’.

L’intrepido is a comedy directed by Gianni Amelio. Contemporary Italy is portrayed through the depiction of people holding extremely precarious jobs. The main character of the movie is played by Antonio Albanese, a tender and powerless little man reminding us of a modern Charlie Chaplin. Lonely, abandoned by his wife, marginalized by society, he never gets depressed, although he is going through a series of personal difficulties and keeps on reinventing himself through an unusual job, that of the "replacement". In this odyssey through the world of casual jobs, mainly manual and unqualified, this lonely middle-aged hero experiences the ups and downs of life, always standing by his gifted and tormented musician son and keeping up his spirits, even when terrible things happen to the people he comes across.
